Save and Destroy.

Session 19: The Last Stand – Ravener Strike (Part6)

Raveners strike at the heart of the C&C. While the Kill Team saves General Stein, his Command Staff are eliminated by the surprise attack leaving him bereft of a well-trained command and logistics team. If it was not for Brother Gregor defending General Stein it is certain he would have fallen in the attack as well.

The attack shows a multi-layered approach to the overall Tyranid strategy. As the Raveners struck, aquatic Warrior bio-forms strike from the canals while a new swarm of gargoyles arrive to provide the Tyranids air coverage and the southern attackers increase the ferocity of their attacks. The northern defenses, thinned by the relocation of forces to defend the southern defenses, begin to collapse. The Kill Team jumps into the mix of things to lend support in different forms.

Brother Gregor steps up and helps General Stein coordinate the defenders to prevent an all-out route, Brother Zydan takes over coaxing the machine spirits of the C&C, Brother Sepheran moves to the front line to provide medicae & leadership support, and Brother Elyas focuses his efforts on providing air coverage by attacking the Gargoyle swarm to the north and then landing in the midst of the Tyranids to slow their overrun of the northern defenses.

The entire Kill-Team converges on the Northern wall when Brother Zydan spots a larger than normal warrior bio-form that has never been cataloged. This bio-form is surrounded by spiked carapaced melee warriors. The Kill-Team suspects that this bio-form is leading, at the least, the northern attack.

Come you aliens, show me what passes for fury amongst your misbegotten kind!

Session 18: The Last Stand – Carnifex Charge (Part 5)

The Kill Team realizes the deviousness of the Tyranids when the Tyranid forces sends forth multiple charging Carnifexes to breach the defenses. The Tyranids send the Carnifexes in twos with one behind the other. Expecting the first to be slain the one behind uses the carcass as a shield and a multi-ton battering ram pushed from behind. If this does not work, it uses the carcass as a ramp to cross over the wall into the defenses beyond.

Even with the multi-layered offense in place the Kill Team coordinates and establishes a strongpoint to enable them to coordinate and focus fire on the Carnifexes. The Astartes stop three in their tracks but one makes it over the wall breaching it but in the process is slain just as it made it past the wall essentially creating a temporary bulwark due to its massive size.

The Imperials use this as an opportunity to fall back to the next layer of defenses where the Tyranids are channeled into Kill Zones. Thousands of Tyranid Hormagaunts, Termagants, and Warriors die due to focused fire and mines but it is nothing more than a tactic to force the imperials to use their limited supplies. What will run out first… the Imperial ammo supply or the Tyranid supply of bodies?

As the fighting rages on the second line of defenses, Brother Gregor meets with General Stein to discuss next strategies when he notices at several points the ground beginning to crack. He calls out a warning as Raveners burst from beneath. From the southern front lines the Tyranids increase the wrath of their attack.

No Mercy. No Remorse. Just Kill.

Session 17: The Last Stand – Genestealer Rush (Part 4)

The Kill Team worked in parallel to eliminate the Genestealer pack to the West while the rest of the team rounded up the brood spawn into a room away from their “comrades” before they were discovered and executed them with no mercy. By this time the other Genestealer pack reached the east gate. The Kill Team then converged and eliminated the Genestealer pack before it could cause a breach. It was close but the kill Team’s efforts prevented a breach just as the Tyranids sent a tsunami of living claws and teeth into the southern defenses of the Imperial forces.

Success is measured in blood; yours or your enemy's.

Session 16: The Last Stand – More than a Mindless Horde (Part 3)

The Imperial forces with the aid of 6 space marines laid waste to thousands of Hormagaunts while under fire from an equal number of Termagants. While victorious a signficant amount of ammo was expended to hold the enemy forces at bay. But the real purpose of the enemy was discovered when a brood of Genestealers led by a Broodlord were spotted by Brother Malloc. At the same time, back in the defensive holdouts where Brother Gregor was keeping the PDF rallied he took note of suspicious behavior from a small element of the PDF. Suspicious of chaos infiltation he noticed small tell-tale signs of broodspawn. Brother Fugis meanwhile having just called in the flight of Thunderbolts took note of Genestealer bodies left behind the combined fire of Heavy Assault Cannons and the Thunderbolt run; he realized that the Tyranids were sending in parties of Genestealers under cover of the Hormagaunt rush to take out the defenses.

Into the fires of battle! Unto the anvil of war!

Session 15: The Last Stand – Endless Hordes (Part 2)

The Imperial forces laid metal jackets of bolter and slug into the oncoming horde and swarm of gargoyles above. Slaying well over 10,000 brood spawn and mutant traitors as well as clearing the sky of several thousand gargoyles the Imperials survived almost unscathed. But this was only the opening salvo to test the strength of the Imperials and to clear the mined approaches for the Tyranids behind.

Following on the heels of the broodspawn came Termagaunts, Hormagants, Warriors, and Carnifexes. The real fight just begun!

To admit defeat is to blaspheme against the Emperor.

Session 14: The Last Stand – the Opening Salvo (Part 1)

The Kill-Team working with General Stein lay down defenses and setup gun positions. After laying out strategy and tactics the Kill-Team deploys as the Tyranids drive a seemingly endless horde of brood hybrids and mutants from the Ag-Habs. The horde is supported by a swarm of thousands of Gargoyles.

The Alien fails because it canot embrace the Emperor.

Session 13: Supply Run (Part 2)

The battle was fierce but between Brother Zydan and Brother Gregor they were holding their own. Once they crossed the bridge they would be within range of backup but the foul xenos had other plans.

A broodlord and a pack of its Genestealers had covered the bridge with girders and other refuse. Enough to cause the train less than a minute away to crash. Luckily Brother Malloc had been listening to the PDF battle channel and heard the panic of the platoon across the battle channels. Using his jet pack he quickly made it to the bridge to witness the Train moving at full speed towards a bridge covered with enough debris to cause it to go off track and into the canal below.

The Broodlord and its pack were watching the oncoming train and Malloc used that to his advantage. He called a warning to his battle brothers and did a far jump and landed behind the Broodlord catching it by surprise. With surprise on his side he was able to cut it down with a flurry of blows of his chainaxe. Its pack thrown into screeching pain at the sudden death of their pack master.

Meanwhile the battle brothers on the train combined their firepower to eliminate the Shrikes on top of the train while Brother Gregor commanded it to pull on its break in the hope to slow it down. Malloc used the extra seconds to jump onto the pile of debris, plant a melta bomb, and jump away. Just in time as the debris was blown away so the train could cross unimpeded.

The train arrived and the supplies unloaded while a combined force of PDF and the other battle brothers held back the advance forces of the horde.

Session 12: Supply Run

Having decided to put their lives on the survival of the Avalos citizens, the Kill-Team split into two teams to perform two objectives. The first team composed of Brother Gregor and Brother Zydan made the supply run.

They worked with the PDF to acquire a working Mag-Lev Train along with 4 PFD platoons to help them acquire supplies for the stand off at the Munitorium Crusade Tertiary Supply Depot. On the way they noticed they were being trailed by a pack of Hormagaunts numbering well over 200. Having arrived at least 30 minutes before the Horde the Kill-Team they were able to locate a cache of heavy weapons in the Munitorium as well as two working Hellhounds. Coordinating a platoon with the heavy weapons and Hellhounds Gregor setup an ambush for the Tyranids who happened to be herded by a handful of Genestealers.

Meanwhile Zydan discovered a cache of heavy labor servitors that he activated and with the PDF loaded up the train supply cars. After taking the time to find flat cars to load up the Hellhounds they headed back. Nearly three hours had elapsed and they were an hour behind schedule. On the way back they saw a swarm of Gargoyles and something large and ominous winging their way to intercept the train.

As the flying horde came within a firing solution they saw over 500 gargoyles, numerous shrikes, and an unknown bioform in the center of the formation. Having mounted Assault cannons on the top of the train the PDF and two Astartes inflicted heavy wounds upon the flying horde as well as take out the large flying bioform before it could close and do much harm. Though during this the flight of Shrikes were able to land on top of the train and engage the trains defenders.

Events Proceeding the BroodLord Execution Mission

Tyranid Bioship

Note that this is a summary of multiple sessions for players who were not able to attend. Each mission will still be summarized with an AAR. This particular post summarizes the past sessions up to resuming play as well as our first session back. It is written in terms of scenes for ease of summary vs sessions; given the choices made by the Kill Team the scenes intertwine and do not create a direct linear story. A mapping between the relevant sessions and scenes is provided.

Scene 1 (Session 2): Victory is but the Prelude to the Next Battle

After slaying the broodlord and a majority of its spawn, the Kill-Team exits the promethium factory to witness a hive ship entering the atmosphere launching uncounted mycetic spores (Tyranid equivalent of drop popds) into the atmosphere of Avalos; a number were streaking towards Lordsholm.

With their mission accomplished the Kill-Team now has set their own mission to survive. After much discussion they decided to stay in Lordsholm and help the Imperials survive; it’s a gambit based on the fact that going solo they could be overrun while staying in Lordsholm they can shore up the PDF and have a chance to survive. Additionally, a secondary objective is to enable as many imperials to survive as possible.

The Kill-Team, working with General Stein and ignoring Lord Governor Thorsholdt’s demands, has offered their aide in reinforcing the Imperials position. Stein has sealed off the Magistra District and has been taking in refugees in a controlled manner but a number of mycetic spores dropped into the district and now there are wandering bands of Tyranids. He has asked them to work with his teams in cleansing the infestation to provide a safe haven.

Scene 2 (Session 4, 5, & 6): An Idle Mind Leads to Heresy

The Kill-Team hunts down and eliminates several bands of Tyranids when they come upon the battle scene of a White Scars Space Marine (information gleaned from witnesses) hunting Tyranids. Following his trail they come upon a Brood Lord and GeneStealers acting oddly and the trail of the White Scar goes cold. The team pursues the Genestealers into a mansion where they quickly disappear.

Searching the mansion for the elusive Genestealers they come upon a secret entrance to a hidden basement level. Opening the entrance they hear the grating and disturbing chanting of cultists interlaced with bursts of binary scrapcode.

Charging into the basement level the Kill-Team battles a sect of hereteks defended by servitors infected with the Obliterator virus. The heretical Mechnicus have a Tyranid organism entrapped in some elaborate heretical device master linked to an array that seems to grant some level of control over the Tyranids. Charging ahead and slaying all before them they destroy the device and free the Tyranid that attacks them with a violent psychic assault.

As they defeat the Tyranid organism they sense the withdrawal of an entity. With that withdrawal comes an overwhelming sense of a great hunger that fades with the presence of the entity.

Scene 3 (Session 3 & 9): Suffer Not the Alien to Live

Unknown to the Kill-team, while they searched the mansion a wave of Tyranids were forming on the other side of the Rag Makets. This wave broke into chaos and a rampage when the device was destroyed in the Nobles mansion (a data point that was correlated after the fact). The Kill-Team exited and discovered panic over the air waves as the battered PDF went to ground to defend the Market ward against the encroaching Tyranids.

In fear the Governor and his entourage of lackeys boarded a modified orbital yacht with the intention of fleeing to the interior of the continent to Highlords View where they felt there would be safety. They didn’t get far.

Gargoyles swarmed over the shuttle and sacrificed themselves to destroy the engines by throwing themselves into the intake valves. To make a much more delicate situation worse, the shuttle crashed into the Market Ward where the PDF were making a stand. The Governor, surviving the crash and unwilling to leave the perceived safety of the shuttle demanded General Stein protect him.

General Stein pulling out a large portion of PDF entered the market ward to setup a defensive perimeter around the shuttle. The Governor, fearing for his safety, refused to leave till the threat of the Tyranids were defeated.

Hearing all of this take place, the Kill-Team proceeded to the Market Ward where they joined the PDF in beating back the maddened rush of Tyranids. Outnumbered by 3 to 1 the PDF were pushed back beyond the Rag Markets but were able to hold off the uncoordinated Tyranids with the aid of the Kill-Team.

Scene 4 (Session 10): A Cowards Just Reward

Tired of his foolishness and considering him a threat to everyone’s survival, the Kill-Team proceeded to the shuttle’s location to confront and possibly execute the Governor. They came upon an abandoned shuttle with only the Governor and his two main advisors within. One of the advisors, a Viscount Mallear, was listening at the top of a stairwell to the hold below where the Governor could be overheard sniveling and whining to his other advisor Dominius Trantor.
The Kill-Team could overhear Trantor slap the Governor and command him to do what he says when they came down the stairs. It was at this point that the Kill-team entered the hold with the obvious intent of violence. Trantor pushed the Governor behind him and began to chant at which point the team filled him full of bolter rounds. Dying they saw his body explode with warp energy and a horde of rampaging Daemons were unleashed.

Protecting the Governor, the Kill-Team made short work of the Daemons. At this point they turned to the Governor and made it obvious that while they were uncertain as to his allegiance his ineptness was a threat to the Imperial peace. In all other encounters the Governor gave way in his weak willed manner breaking down in fear he soiled himself and began to weep. Above they could hear Mallear running and shouting for help… that the Space Marines were going to kill the Lord Governor.

The Kill-Team decided to hold their justice at this point. But they did confront the Governor about his decision to stay in this open area with no natural defenses to help defend against the Tyranids. Oddly with the arrival of General Stein and his advisor the Governor grew a spine and stood up to the Kill Team when they demanded he order his troops to withdraw. The Governor called upon the Emperor’s grace and pointed beyond the shuttle to where a mercantile chapel to the Emperor stood. “He brought us here for a reason. And here we stand before this xenos blemish to show it we are not afraid.”

Not seeing any other options the Kill-team withheld the Emperor’s justice and let the Emperor leave with his lackey’s. Having made their point, the Governor would be on a short leash or will he?

Scene 5 (session 11): The Best Laid Plans of Mortals and Astartes

Two members of the kill-team, Brother Gregor and Brother Zydan, met with General Stein and his advisers while the rest of the Kill-Team set about to help the defenders prepare for the coming Tyranids. They reviewed the battle plans, made some suggestions, and offered help by sending out two teams: one to retrieve supplies from the Munitorium Crusade Tertiary Supply Depot by Maglev train and another to circle around the path of the oncoming Tyranids to create a firewall to funnel the horde and retrieve promethium from the Fabrica District.
